When I was growing up...

...my parents had just finished four years in Germany. I was born there, and we all returned to the states when I was about four months old. I remember being raised in a household surrounded by furniture and pictures and glassware and culture reminiscent of my parents' time in Germany. They loved it and wanted to live in it, even here.

So this past weekend I just happened to walk through a farmer's market, and as I was walking I suddenly looked to my right and saw a baker's case full of REAL bread. If you have ever been to Germany - and most of Europe, from what I understand - you'll know what I mean. (For years my dad called all American bread "air bread".)

I was very excited by this discovery. The seller cut me a piece and I was in heaven. I couldn't afford the $7.50 for the round, but I immediately went to TJ's and bought a Pugliese loaf - which really isn't that similar, but it IS good bread and fits within my budget. I went a tad overboard on the cheese - Iberico. And I bought some salame. When I got home I pulled out a big, heavy, wood cutting board, sliced up the bread and the cheese, and added a row of the salame to the board, and voila...instant European tradition. My dad would go to the baker every morning (in Germany), buy a loaf of bread, and leave it on a cutting board with a knife all day long, along with some cheese. They also left a bottle of wine out all day, and usually some sort of fruit - pears or grapes. I remembered and then I shared this tradition with my children. It was nice.

i took a few too many knocks to the head. Somehow kids just don't have the ability for construction that adults do. :-)

speaking of the prostate cancer blog... one of my good friends is a phd student in cancer biology (i.e. she actually spends her days in a lab, trying to cure cancer). I forwarded her the link as amusement fodder.

Some people, I tell ya.

Like I been sayin', Rudi - we should get married! Look how in sync we are...

...course you probably wouldn't put up with that whole 'ending my sentences with prepositions' thing.

...my room was always so messy that my mom would have to threaten to throw everything away before I would clean anything up. It would take days to clean.
