My latest (and possibly greatest) new idea is becoming a certified Lactation Consultant. I've had such a positive experience breastfeeding so far that I really want to be support to other moms. In conjunction with this, I've been investigating what it would take to become a certified Doula (essentially a support person who can help a family have the birth experience they desire - barring medical complications). I'm going to a La Leche League (BFing support group) meeting soon to hook up with other nursing moms. If I like that organization, I may try to become a leader through them.
Pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood have SERIOUSLY changed my life in so many ways, all for the richer. I'd love to be able to help other moms in any way possible. Every baby deserves the best possible upbringing, and if that means a mom needs help or support, there's no shame in that. Being a doula and/or an LC would be something I could do on my own, even once I'm a teacher. (Especially in the summers).
Other ideas I've had: being a tutor, working at a drop-in center, volunteering as a crisis counselor, etc... I was a graduate student in social work for a reason. heh. (I also dropped out for reason - high tuition rates, low salaries and high burnout)...
